SCHOOL PROFILE
GENERAL
PROGRAM-Bell School of English is an ELT institution
associated with the Bell Educational Trust. It operates
a language school which is presently located in two centres
in Poznań, one in Konin and one in Ostrów. PROGRAM-Bell offers tuition to approximately 1000 students. The school
is a part of the Bell Associate Network in Poland which
also includes Gdansk, Kraków and Warsaw.
The school has a Director of Studies responsible for
academic management, and administrative staff handling
enrolment and registration of students.
PROGRAM-Bell employs about 40 full-time qualified teachers
from Poland as well as Britain and the US.
COURSES
PROGRAM-Bell runs general English courses for the public
as well as in-company courses of both general English
and ESP/Business English.
The academic year, which begins in the end of September,
consists of two semesters: September - January and February
- June. Three basic types of general English courses
are offered: for children aged 7 - 9 (beginner to upper
intermediate) for teenagers and adults (beginner to advanced)
examination courses (preparing for FCE, CAE and CPE)
Classes are held twice a week from Monday to Friday between
3 and 8.30 p.m.
ESP courses are tailor made and designed to cater for
the individual client's language needs. They are usually
run on the company premises, in the mornings or early
afternoons, Monday to Friday. The last two years has
seen a sharp rise in the number of one-to-one courses.
In addition, we run intensive weekend courses for individual
firms on an ad hoc basis.
During the summer holidays we organise English camps
for Young Learners (ages 8 - 17) lasting thirteen days;
the teaching on these is topic based with a strong emphasis
on students using their knowledge of English for practical
as well as fun purposes.
TEACHING
The teaching programme is based on syllabuses, level
descriptions and course guidelines with a maximum of
8 students in children's groups, 10 in teenage and adult
groups and 12 in the exam groups. British coursebooks
are used. Communicative approach to teaching is generally
followed, putting an emphasis on speaking and listening,
and group and pair-work.
Class observations are carried out on a regular basis,
on average 2 - 3 times a semester; teachers are given
feedback and any assistance they may need.
Teacher development is an important issue at PROGRAM-Bell and class observations form an integral part of it. In
addition, peer observation and the sharing of ideas and
materials is encouraged. There is an in-house teacher
training session once a month. Our teachers are also
encouraged to participate in outside ELT events such
as the IATEFL (Poland) conference and other, more local
seminars.
TEACHER PROFILE
A typical teacher joining us from Britain or the USA
to teach at our all-year-round courses will have TEFL
qualifications and a university degree. Selection is
based on an interview. Very often teachers who initially
come to work just at PROGRAM-Bell summer camps stay on
to teach for a year. The workload consists of 20 hours
of teaching per week, with a teaching hour of 50 minutes.
If a workload exceeds 25 hours, this will always be with
the prior consent of the teacher. There is a very friendly
atmosphere in the school. Teachers feel valued both by
the managers of the school as well as by the students.
Native speaker teachers who would like to apply for a
teaching post at PROGRAM-Bell should contact the School
